The atmosphere would be at risk from the solar wind a bit (and from Deneb that would be considerable) but I think that could be handwaved away a little if you can say that Olympus and/or Unity has a sufficient magnetosphere to weather it. The only other one I can think of is maybe ionization of water/CO2 molecules due to high background radiation maybe? Lots of high energy UV would might work, but that creates other problems such as the surface being uninhabitable unless you want cancer. There are really no other known mechanisms for free oxygen to be produced on a scale where it would be breathable by humans. Only way complex organic life could be there on a planet like that was if it was placed there deliberately, and as you said, the planet needs to cool down and have oxygen, which in itself is a hallmark of life. Obviously you can't make it too close or else tidal and radiation effects (from the primary's Van Allen belts) will predominate like it does on the Galilean moons.Īccording to the in-game blurb(s) Unity had teeming (and presumably hostile) life on the surface before they left. You can tweak the greenhouse gases and orbital period quite a bit to get the desired temperature and day/night cycle depending on how large you think the gas giant is and so on. A corollary to this is that this suggests a high level of volcanic activity. Not only will planets have less ability to exert gravitational influence over each other due to the larger distance, but the star's mass also ensures that the corresponding Hill sphere will be smaller for the corresponding distance.įinally, I imagine that Unity could actually be a little further from the star than the habitable zone would suggest due to the effect of tidal heating. When you have a star that big (20+ solar masses) and orbits neatly spaced out like that in order to put planetary bodies in the habitable zone, the gravitational influence of the star will be much stronger than if the same bodies were around Sol. Those aren't really likely to host life-bearing planets either (as far as we can theorize) but there are some that we know to have planetary systems now (like Fomalhaut).Īlso, this is not a criticism of OP's work BUT creating a stable model of a system like that is relatively easier compared to doing the same for a low mass star. I never really was comfortable with it so I wrote a mod pre-1.8 that changed the system to an A-type main sequence. It could be slightly more plausible if maybe Unity's primary was a brown dwarf that somehow got locked into orbit around Deneb, but that probably creates way more questions than it answers about how it was able to develop the conditions for life on its surface. It might have some interstellar captures or maybe even a companion star, but then we're not talking about a system that could even remotely resemble the one in Stellaris. high stellar angular momentum (means no condensing of stellar material into protoplanetary disc).variable star (there is an entire class of these, the Alpha Cygni variables, named after it). The chances of a star like that having habitable systems is basically zero: I dunno why Deneb was chosen as the home system. /r/Xenonion (Stellaris' Finest News Source).Twitter account of Daniel Moregard, Stellaris director.Result: Paradox is Swedish" Websites and Wikis Please use proper spoiler formatting if you are going to discuss spoiler content in non-spoiler threads: >!Paradox is Swedish!< Please mark a thread for spoilers if there's spoilers in the main post or if there's going to be open discussion of spoilers in the comments To avoid spoiling narrative surprises for others, please adhere to the following guidelines: If you want stricter quality control, go to /r/ParadoxPlaza BANNED TOPICĬontent that breaks the spirit of these rules may be removed at moderator discretion.
